For those who don’t know, I am Mike’s favorite (and only) daughter and I’m trying to follow in his very large footsteps! My dad is very passionate about flowers and works very hard to grow the best plants around. This informal blog is from my view and will keep you up to date on the happenings of McCabe’s!

We just got them in this summer and they are going fast. This ornamental tree is fabulous for the full sun and can take part shade. The best thing is, they will bloom all summer!

The petunias love this warm weather. One of our most frequently asked questions is “how do you get your petunias to look that good?” Well there is a lot of hard work that go into our petunia hanging baskets. First we start with excellent varieties, great potting soil, and regulate water, temp, and space. But we have already done all of that for you. So all that there is left for you to do is water them daily and feed them with Jack’s Classic Petunia Feed. This little jug of fertilizer is the key to keeping the petunias blooming and it keeps the leaves from yellowing in the middle of summer. Another secret is if they start to look leggy, cut them back and in two weeks you’ll have beautiful full baskets!
We needed a nice sunny day so the flowers could soak in some much needed rays. As always my dad sprinkled his magic touch on the hanging baskets and they are looking wonderful. Big and beautiful petunias, trailing bacopa, rich dragon wing begonias, and a touch of euphorbia are what makes this years baskets terrific.

The rain held out and we were able to celebrate with a big crowd! We grilled out hot dogs, hamburgers, mets, and provided snacks and drinks. We ran several one day sales throughout the store. But the main goal was to let everyone view our newly designed nursery. Thanks to all who came out and joined in our celebration!

Every year the Art Guild does a spring art show at the Shuck’s building in Aurora. They ask local florist and garden clubs to do a companion piece to a piece of art work of our choice. This year I picked a fabulous watercolor by Joan Abdon. It was a painting of a croquet set. I made my croquet mallets out of bamboo and decorated the stripes with flowers. The croquet balls were represented by colorful geraniums and added wire wickets to finish the scene. I placed second in the event. The art will be on display all this week. Stop by and support the local artist and see my design!

This was the second year we decided to do Mommy and Me Day. Kids came in and enjoyed snacks, learning about flowers, and getting to hand pick flowers to plant in the basket. Each kid’s basket was unique. We keep the baskets and care for them until Mother’s Day, when the parents can pick up the finished baskets. It’s a great gift for Mother’s Day!

Green is still setting trends in spring, fall, and winter bouquets.
