For those who don’t know, I am Mike’s favorite (and only) daughter and I’m trying to follow in his very large footsteps! My dad is very passionate about flowers and works very hard to grow the best plants around. This informal blog is from my view and will keep you up to date on the happenings of McCabe’s!

The seed will germinate as the weather warms. The advantages to dormant seeding is that it usually requires no watering, germinates earlier than a late spring seeding, and naturally works it’s way into the ground as it freezes and thaws.

Step 1 of the Fertilome Three Step Program : Lawn Food plus Crabgrass and Weed Preventer - Crabgrass is an annual weed that dies out in the fall during a freeze. The seed of the crabgrass will germinate as the weather warms in the spring. To prevent the crabgrass from germinating, you can put down the First Step. Prodiamin prevents weeds in your lawn for up to 8 months. This is best applied in March or April.

Over Seeding and Step 1 - These steps cannot be done at the same time. The first step will prevent your weed seed from germinating, but also your grass seed. You will want to wait until your grass has germinated before putting down the first step. Waiting will allow some weed seed to germinate, but since weed seed does not all germinate at the same time, it still will benefit you to put the first step down to prevent the majority of the weed seed. Any seeds that were missed and germinate can be killed with Fertilome’s Weed Free Zone. This is a liquid spray that works in cool weather that will kill the weeds without harming the grass.
With it being a new event, we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but the turnout was great. We created some unique bouquets to go with our shabby chic booth. Becky and I manned the booth, but both Stacey and Adam helped do a lot of prep work and designing. The fashion show was held at Boogie Nights and was quite an interesting show. Congrats to the winners of the giveaways!

We had a blast like usual and hope everyone else had a good time as well. For those who tried the Sugar Cookie Martini’s - here is the recipe!
1/4 Part Butter Schnapps
1/4 Part White Chocolate Godiva Liquor
1/4 Bailey’s
1/2 Powered Sugar mixed with 1/2 Part Water (to dissolve sugar)
Dab of Vanilla Extract

Then to embellish the martini glass add corse granular sugar and crushed vanilla wafers to the rim.

(for those who know their drinks well, then you realize this is a vodkaless martini. We tried it with vanilla vodka, but it made it too strong for our event, but feel free to add vanilla vodka to give this drink a kick!)

Rain is finally headed this way, so this weekend will be a great time to put down the second step of the Fertilome 3 Step Lawn Care program. If you have weeds, put down the Weed Out plus Lawn Fertilizer. If you have been on top of the weed control, then put down the Lawn Fertilizer with Iron. Stop in and talk to our experts for more info!

The petunias love this warm weather. One of our most frequently asked questions is “how do you get your petunias to look that good?” Well there is a lot of hard work that go into our petunia hanging baskets. First we start with excellent varieties, great potting soil, and regulate water, temp, and space. But we have already done all of that for you. So all that there is left for you to do is water them daily and feed them with Jack’s Classic Petunia Feed. This little jug of fertilizer is the key to keeping the petunias blooming and it keeps the leaves from yellowing in the middle of summer. Another secret is if they start to look leggy, cut them back and in two weeks you’ll have beautiful full baskets!
